Theatre Group GUMBO
Theatre Group GUMBO was established by Director Kayo Tamura in 1994. Based in Osaka, this group has performed original works in 39 cities in 11 countries and received many awards.
GUMBO began touring internationally in 1997 performing abroad annually at Edinburgh, London, Portland, Colchester, New York, San Diego, Orlando, Tampa, Los Angeles, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Vancouver, Hong Kong, Singapore, Manila, Iloilo, Taipei, Siem Reap, Chattogram, Melbourne, Adelaide, Sydney, Natimuk, Mildura, Darwin and Launceston.
GUMBO has received international awards including the Edinburgh Fringe Festival "Spirit of the Fringe" award in 1998, Melbourne Fringe Festival "Special Commendation" award in 2003, San Diego Fringe Festival "Fringe Of The Fringe" in 2016, "Artists' Pick Award" in 2017, "Outstanding Comedy" in 2016 & 2017, Tampa Fringe Festival "Best in Fest Award""Tech Choice Award" in 2018, Orlando Fringe Festival "Black Venue BlueStar's Pick" and Edmonton Fringe Festival "Critics' Choice Media Pick" in 2019, Frigid Festival NYC "Best Ensemble""Staff Choice", Orlando Fringe Festival "Patron's Pick", San Diego Fringe Festival "Best Of Fest""Audience Favorite", Hollywood Fringe Festival "Pick Of The Fringe" in 2022, Edmonton Fringe Festival "Artist Pick", Vancouver Fringe Festival "Spirit Of The Fringe", London Pub Theatre Awards "Standing Ovation Award" Nomination, and Colchester Fringe Festival "Spirit Of The Fringe""Artist's Pick""Volunteer's Pick" in 2023. Kayo Tamura also received an award for her direction of the group with the "Emerging Artist Prize" in 2003.
In 2022, GUMBO successfully completed a half-year North American long tour and won seven awards.
In addition, GUMBO has actively collaborated with overseas artists, producing not only stage works but also short films, music festivals, art exhibitions. In 2012, DasSHOKU SHAKE!, collaborated with Australian artists, won "Green Room Awards". Ring-a-Ring-o' Rosie, collaborated with Singaporean actors, was performed in Osaka, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taipei. And this production was received "Honorary Membership" from Hong Kong Fringe Club in 2015.
Since 2016, GUMBO has joined community arts projects and connected local residents with overseas artists. In 2017, Kayo Tamura became the Artistic Director of Kamikoma Cats, Kizugawa, Kyoto and received "Awards for Contributions to the Development of Uji-cha Tea and Overseas Promotions" from Kyoto Prefecture. Since 2019, GUMBO has been teaching and supporting Sakai International Community Arts.
Since 2018, GUMBO has been the advisor of Asian Youth Theatre Festival Team JAPAN.

Kayo Tamura
Director / Actress
Kayo studied a vast range of theatrical methods at Kindai University. The Lecoq system has become her specialty.
After graduating from university, she performed in various theatrical genres and eventually founded the GUMBO Theatre Group in 1994 becoming a director in her own right. As an actor, Kayo always tries to become one with the audience by being honest and soul baring. She was also a director/performer/writer/singer of a comedy show style musical performance held with GUMBO members.
Kayo is an accomplished artist who fearlessly blazes her own trail with a strong background in theory, performance, writing and directing. She has also discovered methods for helping actors find their own original characters by converting their weak points to strengths. As a director, Kayo works to touch the feelings of her audience through unique physical expression, music and dance. This modern and new approach to directing is rated highly outside Japan as an unparalleled style of directing. Since 1997, she has taken GUMBO to perform in Edinburgh, Australia, Asian countries and North America winning numerous awards. In addition, Kayo has been active in collaborating with overseas actors and musicians to produce her performances actively overcoming language and cultural barriers.

Ryo Nishihara
Producer / Actor
Ryo studied performing arts at Kindai University. While studying at the University in 2001, he co-produced "The Voice of Canary" with GUMBO, and later became a member of GUMBO in 2003.
Since joining the group, he not only acts in almost all performances, but also co-writes scripts. He is also involved in many theatre festivals and projects.
Nono Miyasaka
Assistant Director / Actress
Nono's career as a freelance director began with "The song for nights" which she composed and directed upon completing acting and directing studies at Kindai University in 2002. In July of the following year (2003) Nono was assistant director for "The summer when you met demons" produced by Theatre Project Sapporo, and actor in "Unreasonable Mme Belle" in December.
In April of 2004 she founded Theatre Project No-no-no and presented "One frame series 1: Hito-Koma" followed by "One frame series 2: HELP", and by January 2005, was also assistant scenario writer for award winning "Das Schloss" (13th Yomiuri Theatre Awards) written by Franz Kafka and presented at the New National Theatre, Tokyo. Nono has been with Theatre Group GUMBO since May of 2005 contributing her skills as assistant director and her light footwork as actor of unique characters.
